Britton in mix for job on line

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 7, 2013 – 6:22 pm

Friday night’s preseason opener in Carolina will be critical for tackle Eben Britton, who has made the most of first-team reps he’s gotten as a result of injuries to Jermon Bushrod and Jonathan Scott.

“Eben is in the mix of finding where our offensive line will be,” said coach Marc Trestman. “He’s in the mix. He’s had a very productive start of camp. He’s versatile; he can play just about every position, both on the left and right side. At this point I can say that he’s definitely involved in being part of this roster on a week-to-week basis, the 46 [active players on game day].”

Britton signed with the Bears in April after appearing in 37 games with 30 starts the past five seasons with the Jaguars. The 6-6, 308-pounder was selected by Jacksonville in the second round of the 2009 draft and started 15 games at right tackle as a rookie. Hampered by injuries in 2010-11, Britton appeared in 11 games with five starts at left guard last season.

While Bushrod has returned to practice after recovering from a calf injury, Scott remains sidelined with a knee injury that has forced him to miss all but one workout since July 31.

“He’s day-to-day, and we’re hopeful,” Trestman said. “As the term [defensive coordinator] Mel [Tucker] uses, the next man up is really where we’re at. And it’s given an opportunity to guys like Eben, getting more with Jordan Mills, getting a better look at J’Marcus Webb, and working our way, and trying to build our offensive line.”

Bears flip-flop tackles Webb, Britton

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 1, 2013 – 3:30 pm

As part of an ongoing evaluation process, the Bears again shuffled their offensive linemen in Thursday’s practice, flip-flopping J’Marcus Webb to left tackle and Eben Britton to right tackle.

“It’s not too hard, just a little change of footwork and hands,” Webb said. “Anywhere coach needs me to play, I try my best. In this offense you’ve got to be able to play both sides, and anytime things happen you’ve got to step up and be ready when you’re called upon.”

After starting 12 games at right tackle as a rookie in 2010, Webb opened all 32 games at left tackle the past two seasons. He was shifted back to the right side this offseason after the Bears signed veteran free agent left tackle Jermon Bushrod, who has been voted to the last two Pro Bowls.

With Bushrod (calf) and Jonathan Scott (knee) sidelined Thursday with minor injuries, Britton worked with the first-team offense for the second straight day.

“You just have to accept [injuries] as part of training camp,” said coach Marc Trestman. “Fortunately, ‘Bush’ will be back and Jonathan will be back and we’ll have a whole group in there.

“The injury situation, we can turn a negative into a positive by working guys at different positions and see where we might be in the season. We’ve still got eight or nine practices here [in Bourbonnais] before we leave, and we’ll use every day to try to get better.”

Britton works with No. 1 unit at left tackle

Posted by Larry Mayer on July 31, 2013 – 4:31 pm

The Bears were down to their third left tackle Wednesday as Eben Britton worked with the first team after Jonathan Scott exited practice with a sore knee. Scott had been filling in for starter Jermon Bushrod, who suffered a strained calf Monday.

“That’s what football is all about,” Britton said. “Guys might go down and you just have to be ready to step in there and get the job done just as well as the [starters].”

Practicing with the No. 1 offense meant facing perennial Pro Bowler defensive end Julius Peppers.

“That was a lot of fun,” Britton said. “When you go against a guy like him, you’ve got to make sure your technique is right. Like we always say on the O-line, take little steps. It just makes you better playing against a guy like Julius.”
