Eight days after losing veteran nickel back Kelvin Hayden to a season-ending hamstring injury, the Bears on Sunday bolstered their secondary by signing safety Derrick Martin to a one-year contract.
A two-time Super Bowl champion, Martin has appeared in 66 games with four starts over seven NFL seasons with the Ravens (2006-08), Packers (2009-10), Giants (2011) and Patriots (2012). He has recorded 37 tackles, three interceptions, eight pass breakups, one sack and one fumble recovery.
Martin was chosen by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2006 draft out of Wyoming. The 5-10, 198-pounder won Super Bowl rings in back-to-back seasons with the Packers (2010) and Giants (2011). He signed with the Patriots last Oct. 31 and appeared in five of New England’s final eight games, registering five tackles and one sack.
To make room on the roster for Martin, the Bears waived first-year safety Cyhl Quarles.
