Trestman pleased with energy at practice

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 5, 2013 – 7:52 pm

The Bears moved Monday’s practice up from 3 p.m. to 11 a.m. due to inclement weather expected in the afternoon, but that didn’t negatively impact the workout.

“I thought the players did a good job today of handling change again and handling the off day [Sunday],” said coach Marc Trestman. “We were better today in practice after an off day than we were a week ago after the off day. The energy was very good. The competitive carries were very good. I thought they handled the change and I appreciate the way we came out in practice.”

In a red-zone drill, Jay Cutler connected twice with Brandon Marshall for touchdowns and Josh McCown completed a pair of TD passes to Terrence Toliver. On one of the plays, the 6-5 Toliver reached high over 6-1 cornerback Sherrick McManis to snare the ball.

Tight end Fendi Onobun, who played four years of basketball at the University of Arizona, slam-dunked the ball over the crossbar after catching a touchdown pass. Defensive end Shea McClellin showed excellent instincts and quickness by blowing up a Joe Anderson reverse.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery, who didn’t finish Saturday night’s Family Fest practice at Soldier Field due to a tight hamstring, worked out without restrictions Monday in Bourbonnais.

Cornerback C.J. Wilson made a nice play to break up a long pass down the middle to receiver Josh Lenz. On a late two-minute drill, defensive end Cornelius Washington and defensive tackle Brent Russell batted down passes. Washington practiced after exiting Saturday night’s practice with an elbow injury.

Trestman eager for preseason opener

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 5, 2013 – 6:15 pm

First-year Bears coach Marc Trestman can’t wait until Friday night’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, but he isn’t the only one in training camp who is eager for the game.

“I think everybody is in terms of getting the chance to compete against somebody else besides ourselves,” Trestman said Monday. “And we’ll get a chance to take a look at certainly some of the young guys and some of the new guys and get involved in the competitive process at another level.

“They’ll get a chance to play under the lights against a different team, in a different environment, and that will all be part of the evaluation.”

Mel Tucker is excited to see how the defense performs in its first game situation.

“Based upon what we see out here on the practice field, we feel like they’ll be ready,” said the Bears’ first-year defensive coordinator. “They’ll be ready to compete and play.

“They know what’s expected. We want to play winning football when we’re out there, whoever’s out there. So we’re looking forward to it. That’s at the end of the week. We’ve got a couple more practices we’ve got to finish up. We’re taking it one day at a time. That’s very, very important.”

Bears defenders no doubt have grown weary of hitting their teammates and will finally have their first chance to take ballcarriers to the ground.

“They’re always champing at the bit,” Tucker said. “They’ve done a nice job. They understand the tempo of the practices and what we’re trying to get done. We’re trying to be cooperative and get work in on both sides of the ball, and then we’ll have an opportunity to maybe pick it up a little bit more in a game situation.”

Bears reveal first depth chart

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 5, 2013 – 5:37 pm

The Bears released their first unofficial depth chart Monday, and there were few surprises.

James Brown and rookie first-round draft pick Kyle Long are listed as co-starters at right guard, as are Shea McClellin and Corey Wootton at left defensive end.

The remaining four starters on the offensive line are left tackle Jermon Bushrod, left guard Matt Slauson, center Roberto Garza and right tackle J’Marcus Webb. Backup tackles are Jonathan Scott on the left side and Eben Britton on the right, both ahead of rookie Jordan Mills.

Steve Maneri is listed as the No. 2 tight end behind starter Martellus Bennett. Joe Anderson and Marcus Rucker are both on the second team at one receiver position behind starter Alshon Jeffery and ahead of veterans Devin Aromashodu and Eric Weems. At the other receiver position, Earl Bennett is listed second behind Brandon Marshall and ahead of rookie Marquess Wilson.

Backups on the defensive line include ends Cornelius Washington and Cheta Ozougwu and tackles Corvey Irvin and Nate Collins. At cornerback, Zack Bowman and Kelvin Hayden are listed as second-teamers ahead of Isaiah Frey and Sherrick McManis.

Veteran Tom Zbikowski is fourth on the depth chart at strong safety behind Major Wright, Anthony Walters and Brandon Hardin.

Bushrod returns to practice Monday

Posted by Larry Mayer on August 5, 2013 – 5:20 pm

Sidelined for a week with a calf injury, veteran left tackle Jermon Bushrod returned to practice Monday on a limited basis, participating in individual drills.

“We understand that things happen in training camp,” said coach Marc Trestman. “We’re certainly happy that it was nothing serious. It’s offered the opportunity, as I said the last few days, to get some other guys some work and move some people around and get some more evaluation. So I think it’s been good and it’s certainly good to see him back.”

The Bears will be cautious with Bushrod as they approach Friday night’s preseason opener against the Panthers in Carolina.

“I don’t think it’s out of the realm that he would play on Friday night, but he would have to be 100 percent for us to even think about playing him,” Trestman said. “There is no need to push this. We’re going to be very patient. Doctors will tell us the condition he is on. We’ll evaluate on Thursday and Friday morning and see where we’re at.”

Offensive tackle Jonathan Scott also returned Monday, participating in individual drills after being sidelined with a knee injury, while defensive end Corey Wootton was not limited after being slowed by a sore hip.

Players sitting out included defensive end Julius Peppers (hamstring), nickel back Kelvin Hayden (hamstring), middle linebacker D.J. Williams (calf) and receiver Earl Bennett, who continues to get evaluated for a concussion. Defensive tackle Stephen Paea did not finish practice as a precaution after experiencing tightness in his hip.
